Otawara is a city in Tochigi prefecture, famous for its beautiful nature and sightseeing spots. This article introduces some of Otawara’s beautiful places, temples and activities.
From the summit of Koteyasan, the entire city can be seen in all its glory.
Running through the city is a river called Nakagawa. Otawara is famous for its fresh salt-grilled sweetfish caught in Nakagawa waters. The unique sweetness of the fish combined with its soft texture makes it an ideal snack to be eaten on its own or mixed with rice.
Unganji Temple dates back to the Heian period and is known for being one of the spots visited by Matsuo Bashō, mentioned in his traveler’s journal, “Oku no Hosomichi”, or “The Narrow Road to the Deep North”.
In contrast to the pomp and splendor of the Unganji Temple, the charm of Daiōji Temple stands out through is elegance. Daiōji Temple adheres to the teachings of the Sōtō School (*3) of Zen Buddhism. At Daiōji Temple, you can practice Zen meditation under the guidance of a Zen priest.

Located in the heart of Mito City, Lake Senba 千波湖 is a great place to relax for locals and visitors alike.
The lake is encircled by a 3km long walking and jogging route which also passes close to Kairakuen Garden and the Ibaraki Museum of Modern Art, making it the ideal route for a relaxed day’s sightseeing. Bikes and swan-shaped pedalo boats are also available to rent, and there are several cafes on the lake shore, perfect for a coffee or ice cream after your walk.
There’s also plenty of wildlife to be found around Lake Senba with koi carp and terrapins in the lake itself and swans and other birds on the banks. Around 30 Whooper swans make their nests at the lake between mid-October and March each year. Be careful not to get too close – these swans are not to be messed with!

東京都台東区上野公園 / 1-29 Uenokoen, 台東区 Taito City, Tokyo

- quote
In 1625, the learned priest Tenkai erected, at this present location called Ueno, a group of temples known by the overall name of Toeizan Kan’ei-ji in consultation with the shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, for the purpose of protecting the northeastern gate “Kimon”* of the Edo Castle, known today as the Imperial Palace. The Kan’ei-ji Temple, under the strong and favorable patronage of the Tokugawa Shogunate, soon became the general headquarters of the Tendai-shu (one of the oldest sects of Buddhism in Japan).
Soon after that, they installed an imperial prince as the head priest. They called this priest, “Rinno-ji-no Miya” or “Ueno-no Miya.” “Miya” means “Prince.” Then many feudal lords under the Tokugawa Shogunate contributed in competition toward the building of the temples and holy structures affiliated with the Kan’ei-ji Temple. Most of these magnificent temples and holy buildings, which once symbolized the prosperity of the Tokugawa Shogunate, were destroyed in the Ueno Battle of 1868.
Now, only the Five-Storied Pagoda, Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, Kaizan-do Temple, the front gate of the old Rinno-ji Temple, and the cemetery of the successive Tokugawa Shoguns are vaguely reminiscent of the old grandeur of the Kan’ei-ji Temple.

Genmei Tenno元明天皇 - Genmyō Tennō (661 - 721)
- quote -
Empress Genmei (元明天皇, Genmei-tennō, 660 – 721), also known as Empress Genmyō, was the 43rd monarch of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession.
Genmei's reign spanned the years 707 through 715 CE.
In the history of Japan, Genmei was the fourth of eight women to take on the role of empress regnant. The three female monarchs before Genmei were Suiko, Kōgyoku/Saimei, and Jitō. The four women sovereigns reigning after Genmei were Genshō, Kōken/Shōtoku, Meishō, and Go-Sakuramachi.
Before her ascension to the Chrysanthemum Throne, her personal name (imina)was Abe-hime.
Empress Genmei was the fourth daughter of Emperor Tenji; and she was a younger sister of Empress Jitō by a different mother. Her mother, Mei-no-Iratsume (also known as Soga-hime), was a daughter of Udaijin Soga-no-Kura-no-Yamada-no-Ishikawa-no-Maro (also known as Soga Yamada-no Ō-omi).

The temple is rather new, it was built in 1880.
The main statue is 銅仏 made from copper. Maybe it dates back to 北条政子 Hojo Masako, who found it in a well. During the Kamakura period, it was venerated at the temple 新清水寺 (しんせいすいじ) Shinseisui-Ji in Kamakura around 1258.
The well is now called Tetsu no I鉄ノ井 well where iron was found.

Ekoin Kannon, Ekō-in 回向院観音 - Ryogoku
諸宗山 Shoshuzan, 無縁寺 Muen-Ji

東京都墨田区両国2-8-10 / Ryōgoku, Sumida, Tokyo

Bato Kanzeon Bosatsu 馬頭観世音菩薩 "Kannon with a horse head"

- quote
Ekō-in (回向院), also known as Honjo Ekō-in,
is a Pure Land Buddhist temple in Ryōgoku, Tokyo. The formal name of the temple is Shoshūzan Muen-ji Ekō-in (諸宗山 無縁寺 回向院), reflecting its founding principle of Pariṇāmanā, or the spreading of Amida Buddha's benevolence to all souls of all living creatures.
- History
On March 2, 1657, the Great Fire of Meireki destroyed 60 to 70% of the city of Edo (Tokyo) and killed about 100,000 people. The shōgun Tokugawa Ietsuna wished to commemorate the victims of the fire, most of whom were not survived by relatives. For this purpose he erected a monument called the Banninzuka (Mound of a Million Souls) and held a great memorial service conducted by Jun'yo Jōjin (遵誉上人, Holy Priest Junyo) of Zōjō-ji. A temple for prayers to Amida Buddha was built at the same time. This was the origin of the Ekō-in, which today continues to offer a resting place for any soul who did not leave relatives behind, including victims of natural disasters, prisoners, and animals.
- Sumo
The temple was known as a sumo wrestling venue during the Edo and Meiji periods. The kanjin-zumō, a charity fund raising event permitted by the Tokugawa shogunate and the origin of the current professional sumo, was first held in the temple in September 1768. The temple was the site of all tournaments from October 1833 to 1909. These 76 years are known as the period of "Ekō-in sumō".
In 1909, the tournaments were moved into the original Ryōgoku Kokugikan, a modern arena in the temple precincts that had a capacity of 13,000 spectators and that was nicknamed as the Great Iron Umbrella. This contributed to the popularity of the sport by making it possible to hold sumo tournaments regardless of the weather.
Also in the precincts is a monument called the Chikarazuka (力塚, Power mound), built in 1937 by the Sumo Association as a memorial to past wrestlers. Today it has become a place where apprentice wrestlers come to pray for power.
After World War II, sumo tournaments moved to various venues in Tokyo and then to the Kuramae Kokugikan arena in Taitō, Tokyo, before returning to the Ryōgoku district in 1985. The current Ryōgoku Kokugikan arena is located only about 400 meters from the temple.

In 1816, a memorial stone for cats was erected at Eko-In.
Tokida Kisaburo 時田喜三郎 from Ryogoku town had kept a cat. The fish vendor who visited his shop every day and gave some fish to the cat became ill. So Kisaburo stole some money and gave it to the fish vendor. The members of the Tokida family, who did not know about this, killed the cat.
The fish vendor wanted the cat to have eko回向 "a transfer of merit" and go to heaven, so he built the memorial stone.

Konjiki Fudo 金色不動尊 "Golden Fudo"
秋嶠山 Shukyozan 地蔵院 Jizo-In 妙法寺 Myoho-Ji

茨城県桜川市本郷13 / Ibaraki, Sakuragawa, Hongo

The temple was founded around 800, when a priest from temple 大慈寺 Daiji-Ji built a cottage and placed a Kannon with 1000 arms there.
He called his retreat 晶屋精舎 Akiya Shoja. Later priest 慈覚大師円仁 Jigaku Daish Ennin visited there and decided to renovate the retreat.
He placed a statue of 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu, which he had carved himself.
The name was changed to 阿炬那摩山顕法憧園 Akiyamasan Kenhodo En.
Around 910, it was renamed 阿幾那摩山十輪院妙法寺 Jurin-In Myoho-Ji.
The buildings were lost to fire, but the statue of Jizo fled to the nearby swamp and was safe, now called
水縁地蔵尊 Suien Jizo Son.
Around 1090, 藤原範明 Fujiwara Noriaki made a vow to liberate 奥州 the Oshu region in Northern Japan. On the 16th day of the seventh month (lunar calendar) there was mando-e満灯会 a ritual with lanterns on the top of the mountain to pray for safety.
Around 1460, the building was lost to fire again and in 1571 relocated to its present location in Hongo.
In 1649, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu bestowed the land to the temple.
The temple houses sokushin butsu即身仏 the living mummy of 舜義上人 Saint Shungi Shonin. Many people come to venerte it.
. sokushinbutsu, the Living Mummies of Japan .

The statue of Fudo Myo-O in the main hall is more than 60 cm high and very impressive.
On each side is one of the doji童子 attendants of Fudo.
People come here to pray for hissho kaiun必勝開運 certain victory and shogan joju諸願成就 fullfillment of all wishes.
