Yakushizakura 薬師ザクラ / 薬師桜 Cherry Blossom Yakushi

At the Yakushido Hall from the temple 瑞龍院 Zuiryu-In.
山形県西置賜郡白鷹町高玉字薬師堂 / 1071 Minowada, Shirataka, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata

The tree is about 15 m high and has a diameter of 8 meters.
The cherry type is called エドヒガン Edohigan, Edo Higan sakura

The temple has been founded in 1453 by the local Daimyo 伊達持宗 Date Muramune (1393 - 1496).
Legend knows that there was another old Sakura tree colse by, dating back to 1200, to Sakanoue Tamuramaro, named

人が死んで魂魄がまだ散じる前は、寃鬼となって人間の目にも見える事がある。それを日本では幽霊と呼んでいる。寃鬼が見える時は雲や霧のようだが、雲霧も天地の気が集まったものであるのと同様に、寃鬼も気が集まっているので見えるのだという。また、死んで長年経ってから見えるのは狐狸の妖怪である。

美青年が幽霊が出るという噂を聞き、退治するために現地に赴いた。女の幽霊は古い柳の霊だと名乗り、成仏したいという。青年は自分が僧侶になって引導を引き渡すと言うと、幽霊は喜んだ。仏になった青年はミイラになっている。

近江国大津の八町で、雨中に必ず現れ飛行する玉のような火がある。その地の人は、大津辻の地蔵の油を毎夜盗んでいた油売が死後、炎になって迷っているという。

島内には山の神の森が4つある。この森について島の俗伝がある。大昔新羅から4つの鬼が渡ってきて我が国土を窺っていたのを、神宮皇后が毒酒を振るまい退治したが、3つの鬼は蓋井の森の脇で倒れ、また1つの鬼は高野の森で倒れた。この魂魄が祟って島民を悩ましたので神に祀った。

広智法印はかつて高野山に登ろうと思って、ある土地に来た際に、飛瀑に紫雲が生じるのを見てここが浄土だと思って入定した。それから470年にわたって体はなんら損なわれることなく、いまもなお在るという。また、900年ほど前にも比叡山で伝教大師の弟子で広智という人がいたのは、この人のことだろう。

Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音
いまだ山城国に都がなかった時、聖徳太子の夢に如意輪観音が出現し、この山城国の東山の地は寺塔を建立するのに大変すばらしい土地であり、必ず建てるべきであると伝える。実際聖徳太子が東山を見ると、紫雲が立ち昇っていたので、ここに法観寺と寺塔を建立し、塔に仏舎利を三粒納めた。

元和寛永の頃、武蔵国比企郡に戒行堅固という、日頃から正身の大日如来を拝みたい僧がいた。そして出羽の羽黒山に登山した時、夢想に江戸にいる佐久間某の召使い竹女を拝せという。そこで江戸に向かうと、佐久間某も同じ夢想があった。そして竹女を拝むと、全身から光明を放っていた。寛永15年3月21日の暁に、屋上に紫雲がたなびき、異香が漂っている中で竹女は大往生を遂げたという。

juugo dooji 十五童子
芸州宮島光明院の開山である以八和尚は宮島に住居を定めたが、常に美しい女性が十数人仕えていた。その事を誹謗する人がいるとの話を聞いて和尚は、彼女らを法談の席に呼び、事情を説明して立ち退きを命じた。すると海上にわかに波が起こり、暴風すさまじい状況になって、先の女性がたちまち蛇の姿になった。それらは黒雲と一緒に海底に入っていったという。彼女らは天女が使わした十五童子だったという。その後、上人は別時念仏の回向の日に往生するといって往生した。すると、紫雲が立ち、妙なる香りがし、潮がみちて遺灰を残らず流していった。竜神が供養したのだと思われた。

無剣山という寺の鐘をつくと百万長者になれるということを聞き、文右衛門は寺を訪ねた。住職は、握飯を池に入れ、飯粒一つ一つが蛭になる様を見せながら、死後蛭に苦しめられてもかまわないならいい、と鐘をつかせた。文右衛門は長者になって大往生したが、出棺の時には棺が軽く、門の前に片腕が落ちていた。

太子は淡路国の海から得られた如意輪像を、毎朝紫雲が覆う杉の霊木で建てた六角堂に安置した。その後、桓武天皇が平安京に遷都した時、六角堂が小路の中にあたった。都を造営する官使たちは、太子の建立した堂だから移すのもどうかと悩んだ所、黒雲がこの堂を覆い5丈北に退いたので、無事小路を通して都ができた。

佐渡の羽茂の里に住んでいた男は、加持祈禱をやって村人を驚かせていた。ある晩、村人たちを招いて珍しい肉を得たから食べてくれと焼肉らしいものを出すが、村人たちは気味悪がって誰も箸をつけない。田屋のじいさんが、その1片を袂に入れて帰る。娘がそれを知らずに食べ、それは人魚の肉で、娘はそれから齢をとらなくなる。その後、比丘尼になって、若狭の国に渡り、再び佐渡に戻ってくるが、若狭の国へ戻り、1000年の命のうち200年を国主に譲って大往生を遂げる。若狭の人々は八百姫明神と崇めた。

法然の父母は子がないことを嘆いて仏神に祈った。すると母は剃刀を飲む夢を見て懐妊し、苦しむことなく男子を産んだ。その時紫雲がたなびき、白旗が2流降り下り、館の西にある椋の木にかかった。鈴鐸が四方に響き、紋彩が日に輝き、7夜を経て天に上った。この木を誕生椋と名づけ、寺を建てた。

邂逅山紫雲院金龍寺は開山当時は安満寺と呼ばれていたが、応和三年三井寺の僧千観がここに隠棲し名を改めた。これは邂逅池から金龍が昇天したという伝説に基づくという。

阿州阿波郡鏡原に住む妙西尼は、父とともにこの地にやってきて乞食念仏を行った。父が死んで2年経った時に自分の死期を悟ったので、西に向かって端座し、念仏を唱えながら臨終した。その時部屋中に異香が立ちこめ近隣にまで漂い、また紫雲がたなびいて五色の花びらが降ってきたという。

遠江国見付から東南三里に桜が池がある。法然の師匠の皇円が弥勒の出世を待つと誓って、長寿である蛇身になろうと念じ、臨終にこの池の水を掬って亡くなった。その時池の水が動揺して、皇円は淵底で蛇になったという。

むかし比叡山の備後の阿闍梨という者は、自分は死んだら蛇身になって、遠州笠原ノ庄にある桜ガ池に住むと常に言い、臨終の時にこの池の水を取り寄せて掬った。その同じ頃に池では大いに逆波が起きたという。

Once a young man helped to prepare the food for a funeral reception, when 淵の主 the Lord of the Riverpool came out and lend them to him.
He brought them back the next day and other people also came here to borrow them. But one day a greedy man brought back only half of them and the Lord of the Riverpool became really angry. They recited the Amida Prayer and he calmed down. But since then he never lend the trays and bowls for ritual food.
Maybe the Lord of the Riverpool, in fact the Dragon Deity, had moved to another place.

This legend is know in other parts of Japan.

The Mantra of Light (光明真言 kōmyō shingon), also called
the Mantra of the Unfailing Rope Snare,
is an important mantra of the Shingon and Kegon sects of Buddhism, but is not emphasized in other Vajrayana sects of Buddhism. It is taken from the Amoghapāśakalparāja-sūtra or Sutra of the Mantra of the Unfailing Rope Snare of the Buddha Vairocana's Great Baptism and is chanted as follows:

om amogha vairocana mahamudra manipadma jvala pravarttaya hum

Japanese:
おんあぼきゃべいろしゃのうまかぼだらまにはんどまじんばらはらばりたやうん
on abokya beiroshanō makabodara mani handoma jimbara harabaritaya un

Initially, the mantra received little mention in East Asian Buddhist texts, and although Kukai brought the sutra to Japan in the 9th century, there are no records that he ever utilized it in tantric practices. Records show gradually increasing use in the Heian Period, until the 13th century when it was popularized in medieval Japanese Buddhism by Myōe, and later by Shingon monks Eison and Ninshō in their ministries.
Both the Mantra and the nembutsu (nenbutsu) were often incorporated by medieval Buddhists at one time or another, often in the same service. A common practice for the Mantra of Light was to sprinkle pure sand, blessed with this mantra, on the body of a deceased person or their tomb, based on teachings expounded in the Sutra.
The belief was that a person who had accumulated much bad karma, and possible rebirth in Hell would be immediately freed and allowed a favorable rebirth into the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. This practice is known as dosha-kaji (土砂加持) in Japanese.

奥州忍の里に住むタカソトハノタケトシが，息子を光明寺に入れる。息子は光明寺一の学匠となり，比叡山に移ることになった。その頃叡山の高僧は，山王権現から「東から来る童子を弟子とすれば山門の誉れとなる」との霊夢を授かっていた。果たして息子は一大学匠となり，後に盲目の父母と再会を果たす。息子は慈覚大師であり，観音菩薩の化身である。

Dainichi Nyorai 大日如来
天文年間、勅願寺御嶽山光明寺では、兵火を避けて本尊である大日如来を池に埋めた。明暦年間、これを知った長尾村の大島四郎兵衛久成が大日如来を発掘して持ち去る途中、西浦の村人が村の守り本尊だから返せと言って追ってきて奪い合いになった。ところが、西浦の村人が持ち帰ろうとすると、持ち上げることも動かすことも出来ない。長尾の村人が持ち上げると軽々と運べたので、西浦の村人は諦めて帰った。そこで長尾村の大日堂に運び入れて守り本尊にしたという。

He hurried back home, but again the voice called for him and made him come to the bank of the pond.

In 1418, 足利義嗣 Ashikaga Yoshitsugu (1394 - 1418) was killed by his brother 義持 Ashikaga Yoshimichi (1386 - 1428) at the temple 林光院 Rinko-In, where he lived in confinement.
In 1424, on the 14th day of the 6th lunar month, Shogun 足利義量 Ashikaga Yoshikazu (1407 - 1425) became very ill and often mumbled "Oh, what happened then at the temple Rinko-In!" - this must have been the vengeful spirit of Yoshitsugu. After consulting with the Emperor, they held rituals to appease the soul. For seven days, starting on the 4th day of the 7th lunar month, they held rituals 愛染護摩供 for Aizen Myo-O and also had the Komyo mantra read out many times.

宇津野左衛門四郎為忠という郷士の屋敷に、年を経た白狐が棲む。ある夜賊に襲われ、左衛門四郎は悉く賊を斬ったが最後に相討ちになり深手を負って死ぬ。間もなく息を吹き返すと、身に一痩も負わず、傍に白狐が斬られて死んでいた。主人に化して賊の目を欺き、身代りになったのだった。埋葬した場所に稲荷の祠を建て左衛門四郎稲荷という。のち斗瑩山光明寺が別当となり、山号をとって斗瑩稲荷という。

大宇陀町西山の光明寺で、天和年間のこと。ある百姓の妻の葬式でにわかに雷鳴風雨が起こった。憲海上人が棺に七条の袈裟を巻いて本尊の阿弥陀様の箱を投げつけると、たちまち空は晴れて、1匹の老猫が死んでいた。本尊の箱が当ったから、猫は片目がつぶれていた。以来その本尊を猫たたき如来という。

近江の国、栗本郡と野洲郡の境に大川があった。三上山で2川に分かれそのうち南川は土山に当り大渕となっていた。その渕に昔から大蛇が住んでいて、近辺の住民は困っていたが手の打ちようがなかった。嵯峨天皇のとき、雷が鳴り天地振動することがあり、時の博士が占うと先の大川に住むおろちが天皇の命を奪おうと振動させているということだった。そこで天皇は近辺の農民を招き大蛇を退治すべしと命令した。近隣農民数万人が打寄ってついには退治した。その時の出来事から様々な地名がつき、また褒美として大光明寺を給わった。

At the temple 妙満寺 Myoman-Ji in the Teramachidori street in Tokoy there is a temple bell. The bell was first located at the temple 道成寺 Dojo-Ji.
Every time a misfortune happened to the family who owned the bell, it would ring mysteriously. So it was eventually melted and a new bell cast. Now every time before a great rain the bell would start sending smoke into the air.

天正16年、徳川幕府の命を受け幡随意院上人が九州の切支丹退治をなす諸国行脚のついでに善導寺にたちより、百日説法をした。そのとき青柳の竜神が御殿女中の姿で参詣していた。満願の日、竜神が上人に「妻は上州館林のつつじが池に住んでいて、あなたの済度を受け得脱した。自分も済度してもらいたい」と願って言う。そこで上人は済度してやった。この龍を町の人は「青柳の杢太」と呼んだ。

旧幕時代、3月14日を中心に1週間、善導大師の法要が行われた。その期間中に青柳杢太という竜神がお参りする。その証拠は、畳が水で濡れているという。法要中は必ずほんの少しでも雨が降る。

大正4年5月17日、善導寺が焼失した。その1ヶ月か半月前、当時この地へ来た芝居の一団が青柳杢太の伝説を脚色し、市内の人に青柳の杢太にちなんで道具を借りて上演した。その祟りで、善導寺が火元となり、芝居に道具を貸した人たちの所も延焼した。火事跡は蛇がうねったように燃えていたという。

Tenshōzan Renge-in Kōmyō-ji (天照山蓮華院光明寺)
is a Buddhist temple of the Jōdo sect in Zaimokuza, near Kamakura, Japan, the only major one in the city to be close to the sea. Kōmyō-ji is number one among the Kantō Jūhachi Danrin (関東十八檀林), a group of 18 Jōdo temples established during the Edo period by Tokugawa Ieyasu, and dedicated to both the training of priests and scholarly research. It is also the sect's head temple for the Kantō region. In spite of the fact it is a Jōdo sect temple, Kōmyō-ji has several of the typical features of a Zen temple, for example a sanmon (main gate), a pond and a karesansui (rock garden).
Kōmyō-ji
has always enjoyed the patronage of Japan's powerful and is the only Buddhist temple in Kamakura to have had the privilege of being a daimyō's funeral temple. It was chosen for that role by the Naitō clan, feudal lords from today's Miyazaki Prefecture whose tombs are part of the temple's compound.
The temple, besides the usual Buddhist cemetery, maintains a special crypt for the ashes of house pets and other animals, and twice a year holds in the Main Hall ceremonies in their memory. The crypt was created and is maintained by a group of veterinarian volunteers.
The temple holds occasional music concerts in its main hall, concerts that are announced in its Web site. For 3500 yen, visitors who make a reservation can try at Kōmyō-ji the vegetarian food the resident priests themselves eat. Entrance is free, with the exception of the sanmon, which can be visited only telephoning the temple, explaining the motives for the planned visit, making a reservation and paying a small fee.

鎌倉の光明寺に住む檀通和尚が病気の際、弟子の祐天和尚は祈祷堂に籠もって快復を祈ったが何の効果もなかった。そこでさらに念を込めて祈ると、それまで晴れていたのに雨が降ってきたという。

祐崇という僧は、東国を遍歴し、学問に励み、鎌倉の光明寺に住持して多くの者に経文を講じた。その彼が晩年、初冬に十夜念仏を唱えようとし、彼が一番初めに行おうとしたが、一日して少々病気となり、瑞雲がくだったのを見て自分の死を予感したので、威儀を正して念仏を唱えたところ臨終したという。

大正１０年ごろ、鼠小僧治郎吉の墓を学校を建てるために埋め、化学実験室が建てられた。化学実験室は原因不明の火事で全焼し、新築するもまた丸焼けになった。鼠小僧の祟りだという噂が出たので、墓を探して現在の場所に安置し、懇ろに供養した。

Once the road to a temple in Iyo had a landslide and one woman had died in the disaster.
Later another group of women passed this road on a rainy day and suddenly one of them flet her umbrella to become very heavy. She stabbed it with her tsue杖 walking staff and it became light again, but soon afterwards, it felt heavy. That evening all the women recited the Heart Sutra many times and the woman felt much better.

When En no Gyoja was still practising austerities, he climbed 金峰山 Mount Kinpusen in Yoshino and hoped to find a honzon 本尊 Main Deity.
He recited the Heart Sutra for 17 days, when 地蔵菩薩 Jizo Bosatsu showed up. Jizo is a Bosatsu with a most merciful gentle face, but En no Gyoja thought that was not what he needed to bring peace to the world and threw the statue down the valley to the West. This Jizo flew all the way to 大山 Mount Daisen in Tottori and became the honzon本尊 main statue there.

If someone walks in the forest and chants the Heart Sutra, he will not be bewitched by a fox or Tanuki.
Even if an ookami 狼 wolf and one chants the Heart Sutra, the wolf will pass by without doing any harm.

Once a pious person became bewitched by a fox and called for help to get rid of it. A healer begun to recite the Heart Sutra many times, but it did not help.
So he begun to recite darani佗羅尼 / 陀羅尼 mantras and performed choobuku調伏 exorcist rituals until the man was healed.

There is a ritual for the Inari fox deity ((稲荷神 tookami トウカミ).
One man with blindfold eyes sits in the middle, holding a heisoku幣束 ritual wand.
The people around him are chanting the Heart Sutra without a pause. When the deity has possessed the man, he begins to tremble.
Now they spent the whole night to ask him questions about the future and their good or bad luck. Questions about their fields and the harvest are most frequent.

The great-grandfather of 和田氏 Mister Wada called 熊吉 Kumakichi, went to 栗栖川 Kurisugawa to buy oil and fish. On his way back his luggage begun to get more and more heavy and finally he could not eve move. He thought he was bewitched by a fox and begun to recite the Heart Sutra. Soon he felt better and found his way home.

A young woman of 27 years, not yet married, was bewitched by a fox.
A priest and his helpers performed exorcist rituals for four and one half hours, but the fox was still there.
Now they begun to recite the Heart Sutra backwards and shot arrows in the four directions. Finally the fox was gone and the woman came back to her senses.

広島市東区牛田新町 / Ushita-shinmachi, Higashi-ku, Hiroshima city

The temple was founded in 1433.
During repair work a plate was found with the name of the priest 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei from the year 1588.
The shooroo鐘楼 bell tower has the form of a hakamakoshi袴腰, like a skirt or Hakama trousers of men, with a white painting. This type of tower dates back to the Heian period.

During the Edo period, the temple came under the regime of the Zen sect with 寺号 the temple name 宥珍 Yuchin.
A statue of Fudo Myo-O became the center of worship and the name 不動院 Fudo-In became popular.

The Copper Bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple

The large temple bell at Ankokuji Fudoin Temple in Hiroshima City is said to have been brought from Korea
by 安国寺恵瓊 Ankokuji Ekei, who was a daimyo and priest serving for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Mori Motonari during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1568-1598).
It is an excellent artistic work of the early Goryeo dynasty (918-1932). The bell is 1.6 m tall and 65 cm in diameter. Beautiful arabesque designs are cast on relief on the upper and lower parts and four heavenly maidens are on the main body. The sitting image of Bosatsu is also carved in relief on the hitting mark (tsukiza), on which the name “Soshin Bosatsu” is inscribed. The bell was designated as a national Important Cultural Property in 1899.

. Inari 稲荷と伝説 Legends about the Fox Deity .
A fox shape-shifted into a Samurai and called himself 蛻庵 Setsuan. He became a retainer of 諏訪侯 the Lord of Suwa. When they found out about his real identity, the fox-samurai had to go.
He was allowed to live at 興禅寺 the temple Kozen-Ji
Once he had to go to on an errand to 安国寺 the temple Ankoku-Ji, but he was found out and killed.
Soon after an epidemic broke out and people thought it was the curse of the fox.
They build a small shrine in the temple compound and venerated and appeased his soul there
at the 蛻庵稲荷 Setsuan Inari Shrine.

Once late at night, someone knocked at the door of the temple hall of 安国寺 Ankoku-Ji. When the priest opened, there was nobody.
This happened many times in a row from that day on. Once the priest was fast and opened the moment he heard the voice. He saw a Mukina jump away over the roof.

Zenkai 禅海 Priest Zenkai
(?1691 / ?1687 - 1774)
A priest of the 曹洞宗 Soto Zen Sect.
He was the child of 越後国高田藩士 the Lord Takada from Echigo.
His boyhood name was 福原市九郎 Fukuhara Ichikuro.
His full priest name was 真如庵禅海　Shinnyo-An Zenkai.
He became a priest after both his parents had died. He left home and walked around the country.
In 1715 he took the name of Zenkai.
He is known for digging a tunnel in Oita, the Aonodomon in the gorge 耶馬渓 Yabakei.
He stayed at the temple 羅漢寺 Rakan-Ji in Bungo, when he learned about the dangerous route along 青野渡 Aonodo, where people and horses often lost their lives.
He begun to dig a tunnel for a safer passage in this area around 1730, with the permission of
豊前国中津藩主 the Lord of the Nakatsu Domain in Bungo.
With the help of local villagers and other Daimyo from Kyushu the work was completed within about 30 years.

Once it was finished, the villagers took money from the people who used the tunnel, it was the first toll road in Japan.

Aonodōmon (青の洞門 meaning "blue tunnel")
is a tourist attraction located in the gorge of Yabakei, now part of Nakatsu City, in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Legend has it that before the tunnel was built, people had to climb over the cliffs through which the tunnel is built to reach an important local shrine. The path was very dangerous and people regularly fell to their deaths.
During the Edo period, a Buddhist monk named Zenkai, who had committed a murder in his earlier life, decided to build a safe passage for worshipers in order to atone for his crime. Beginning at the age of 49, he dedicated 30 years of his life to digging the 185 metre tunnel by hand, using only a hammer and chisel.

The gorge of Yabakei (耶馬渓)
is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty spanning the municipalities of Kusu and Nakatsu in Ōita Prefecture, Japan.
Located within Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park, it was selected as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan during the Shōwa era. Yabakei was formerly the name of a town, but was merged into Nakatsu Municipality in 2005. 　According to Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, official confirmed report, in despite the absence of rain, suddenly landslides occurred on the mountain slope, three houses were buried in the place and six person were lives on 11 April 2018.

When 禅海上人 Saint Zenkai arrived near 糸崎浦 Itoizaki inlay on kame亀 a turtle, the villagers saw a strange light on the sea. When they pulled it out, it was a statue of 観音 Kannon Bosatsu, so they placed the statue in the local temple.

It is said that this temple was founded in 794 by the priest Saicho, the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, as the east gate of Hieizan Enryakuji Temple, which had been constructed 6 years before as the headquarters of the sect. When Emperor Kanmu visited the temple, he named it Hieizan Tomonin Moriyamadera, which means the temple guarding the east gate of Mt. Hiei.
During the Edo period (1603-1868),
the temple was used as the lodge for Joseon Royal Embassies, the Joseon envoys intermittently sent to Tokugawa Shogunate of Japan. In 1986, the main hall and Kuri (the priests’ quarters) were burned down by a fire. The statue of Juichimen Kannon (Kannon with 11 faces) housed in the main hall was also destroyed by fire. The main hall was reconstructed and the statue was restored to its original form in 1990.
The statue of Fudo Myoo,
which is the principal object of worship in Goma Hall and survived the fire undamaged, and the five-story stone pagoda in the corner of the precinct are designated as national Important Cultural Properties.
Together with other art objects, they tell us of the temple’s 1,200 year history.

... nothing compared to the Sengaji, the pilgrimage to the thousand temples of the Nichiren sect.
The time of a generation may pass before this can be made. One may begin it in early youth, and complete it only when youth is long past. Yet there are several in Matsue, men and women, who have made this tremendous pilgrimage, seeing all Japan, and supporting themselves not merely by begging, but by some kinds of wandering selling.
The pilgrim who desires to perform this pilgrimage carries on his shoulders a small box, shaped like a Buddhist shrine, in which he keeps his spare clothes and food. He also carries a little brass gong, which he constantly sounds while passing through a city or village, at the same time chanting the Namu-myo-ho-ren-ge-kyo; and he always bears with him a little blank book, in which the priest of every temple visited stamps the temple seal in red ink.
The pilgrimage over, this book with its one thousand seal impressions becomes a treasure in the family of the pilgrim. ...

現今私の家に居る門弟の実見談だが、所は越後国西頸城郡市振村というところ、その男がまだ十二三の頃だそうだ、自分の家の直き近所に、勘太郎という樵夫の老爺が住んでいたが、倅は漁夫で、十七ばかりになる娘との親子三人暮であった、ところがこの家というのは、世にも哀れむべき、癩病の血統なので、娘は既に年頃になっても、何処からも貰手がない、娘もそれを覚ったが、偶然、或時父兄の前に言出でて、自分は一代法華をして、諸国を経廻ろうと思うから、何卒家を出してくれと決心の色を現したので、父も兄も致方なく、これを許したから、娘は大変喜んで、早速まだうら若き身を白衣姿に変えて、納経を懐にして、或年の秋、一人ふいと己の故郷を後にして、遂に千ヶ寺詣の旅に上ったのであった、すると、それから余程月日も経ったが、不幸にも娘は旅の途中、病を得て家に帰って来たが、間もなく、とうとう此度は、あの世の旅の人となってしまった、父や兄の悲歎は申すまでもなかったが、やがて、質素な葬式も済してそれも終った。
すると、或冬の事、この老爺というのが、元来談上手なので、近所の子供達が夜になると必ず皆寄って来て、老爺に談をせがむのが例であったが、この夜も六七人の子供が皆大きな炉の周囲に黙って座りながら、鉄鍋の下の赤く燃えている榾火を弄りながら談している老爺の真黒な顔を見ながら、片唾を呑んで聴いているのであった、私に談した男もその一人であったそうだ。戸外は雪がちらちら降っていて、時々吹雪のような風が窓の戸をガタガタ音をさして、その隙間から、ヒューと寒く流込むと、申合した様に子供達は、小な肩を皆縮める、榾火はパッと一しきり燃え上って、後の灰色の壁だの、黒い老爺の顔を、赤く照すのであった、田舎のことでもあるし、こんな晩なので、宵から四隣もシーンとして、折々浜の方で鳴く鳥の声のみが、空に高く、幽かに聞えてくるのである、夜も更けて十時過ぎた頃だった、今まで興に乗じて夢中に談していた老爺が、突然誰も訪れた声もせぬのに、一人で返事をしながら、談半ばに、ついと起って、そこの窓際まで来て、雨戸を開けて、恰も戸外の人と談をしているかの様子であった、暫時して、老爺はまた戸を閉めて、手に何か持ちながら其処の座に戻って来たが、子供等もあまり不思議に思ったので、それを尋ねると、老爺はさも困ったという風をして「何、実はこの間死んだ、己の娘が来たんだがの、葬式の時、忘れて千ヶ寺詣りのなりで、やったものだから困るといって、今この通り、白衣と納経を置いて行って、お寺さんへ納めてくんろといいながら、浜の方さ、行ってしまっただよ」と談された時には、子供達は皆震上って一同顔色を変えた、その晩はいとど物凄い晩なのに、今幽霊が来たというので、さあ子供等は帰れないが、ここへ泊るわけにもゆかないので、皆一緒に、ぶるぶる震えながら、かたまって漸くの思いをして帰ったとの事だが、こればかりは、老爺が窓のところへ起て行って、受取った白衣と納経とを、眼の当り見たのだから確実の談だといって、私にはなしたのである。

The daughter of a pious merchant from Sendai believed strongly in the 法華経 Hokekyo Lotus Sutra.
When she died she became a ghost and went to 身延山 Mount Minobusan.
When she (her ghost) was near 富士川 the river Fujikawa, she met a pilgrim doing the Sengaji Mairi. She tore one furisode振袖 sleeve of her kimono and gave it to him with the quest to show it to her parents. He came to Sendai just on the 49th day after her death. Her parents brought the sleeve to the temple hall 榴ヶ岡釈迦堂 Tsutsujigaoka Shakado and buried it in a mound. This became known as the
Furisodezuka 振袖塚 Furisode Mound.
It is near a slope which is called Furisodezaka 振袖坂.

shijūkunichi 四十九日　- 49 days after death, the soul leaves this world and goes to the other world.
