The main statue is 釈迦如来 Shaka Nyorai.
The date of the founding is not clear. The priest of the second generation, 秀覺 / 秀覚 Hidesato, died in 1624.

Jizo sama no tatari 地蔵さまの祟り the curse of Jizo
There were 六地蔵 6 Jizo statues in the town.
Around 1822 the statues had to be moved to 正福寺 the Temple Shofuku-Ji.
But after that, many people became ill with fever.
When the statues were brought back to their origin, the illness stopped.

The history of the Shima region is recorded in 志州天朗峰福寺縁起, kept at 正福寺 the Temple Shofuku-Ji.
Once a statue of 十一面観音像 Kannon Bosatsu with 11 faces came riding on kujira鯨魚 a whale.
She became the shugoshin 守護神 protector deity of fishermen and sailors.

鶴岡の善宝寺の信仰圏は広く、東北から関東一円の漁村、四国の一部に伝播している。列島を南下すると航海神の種類も増え、三重県の青峯山正福寺や熊野、住吉、宗像、鵜戸などの神々が登場する。正福寺の本尊は十一面観音で高野山派真言宗で、海上安全の祈祷寺であったので、特に竜神との関係はない。

kadomatsu 門松，Yakushi sama 薬師様
正福寺という禅寺があり、薬師堂がある。正月の夜、この堂に安置されていた薬師様が小用に出、闇の中で門松の葉で目をつき失明したので、薬師様は門松を嫌う。それで門松を立てないようにしているという。
