The date of the founding is not clear. It was most probably founded in the Early Edo Period.
It was relocated from 寺谷村 Teratani village to its present place.
Not much information is found online.

kaminari 雷 thunder
上州太田の大光院で呑龍上人が水想観念している目前雷が落ちた。そこで上人は雷を索の印で空縛りにしたところ、雷神は境内はもちろんのこと上人の前でも雷を落とさないことを誓い許された。呑龍雷除名号の由来である。

kiguchi 木口 the cut end of a fallen tree
The Temple 大光院 Daiko-Ji has the family graves of 新田家 the Nitta clan.
Near the grave of 新田義重 Nitta Yoshishige (1135 - 1202) is 大松 a huge pine tree.
. matsu 松と伝説 Legends about the pine tree / 松の木 matsu no ki .
During a strong storm around 1800 it fell down.
When people looked at the cut end of the broken tree, it looked like 葵の葉の形 an Aoi leaf.

aoi is a plant of the Malvaceae group.
mitsuba aoi, Aoi with three leaves - "triple hollyhock", is the crest of the Tokugawa clan.

呑竜上人 Saint Donryu Shonin (1556 - 1632)
When 呑竜上人 Saint Donryu Shonin visited the Temple Daiko-In, he sealed the mouth of the frogs in the pond,
so they could not make any sound any more.

kitsune tsuki 狐憑き bewitched by a fox
昔、へんなふうになってしまった女の人がいて、頭から半天を被ったり褌をつけて部屋で腰巻1丁になって逆立ちしたりした。大光院のワカサマに御祈祷してもらうと狐憑きとわかったのでガキ様に油揚げ・お強飯をあげた。
