The temple was founded in 806 by Kobo Daishi.

In 1210, it was renewed by 智空法師 （俗名多田福寿丸） Tada Fukujumaru, the son of 多田行綱 Tada Yukitsuna (? - ?).
It was again renewed in 1625.
In 1716, the characters of the name were changed to 壽福寺.
