The temple 二井寺 Niidera was founded in 755 by the priest 大領秦皆足朝臣.
He had a dream, went up to the mountain and placed a Kannon Statue in the Hall.

二井寺は玖珂の大領秦皆足朝臣が天平１６年（７４４）、霊夢を感じて当山に登り、神霊より十一面観音像を授けられ御堂を開いたことに始まる。
後に聖武天皇の勅願寺となり、二十四坊に拡大、一山の総称を二井寺山と呼ぶ。
これは閼伽井、桜井という名水が２つあることに由来する。
大内氏滅亡の後さびれてしまったが、寛永年中（１６４２－１６４４）岩国横山村妙福寺住職侑山が吉川候に再興を願い、元禄７年（１６９４）吉川宏紀により再興された。
